About Ioannina

Ioannina sits on the southern shore of Lake Pamvotida, a serene setting that perfectly complements the city’s rich history. From here, Ali Pasha, known as the “Lion of Ioannina,” established a fiefdom spanning much of western Greece and present-day Albania. His citadel, the Kastro, perches on a rocky peninsula on the western bank of the lake, offering spectacular views and a step back into the city’s Ottoman past.

A walk through Ioannina’s historic streets evokes a bygone era. Several mosques and a synagogue within the castle reflect the city’s multicultural heritage. The synagogue is one of the oldest and best-preserved in Greece, a testament to the enduring influence of the Jewish community. Ioannina has long been shaped by the coexistence of Christian, Islamic, and Jewish traditions, visible throughout the city centre.

The Stoa Louli, an arcade built in 1875 with arches imported from Italy, illustrates this shared history. Originally functioning as an inn for travellers from nearby villages, it later became a commercial hub for Jewish merchants trading fabrics and leather. Today, following careful restoration, the arcade houses shops and restaurants, blending history with modern life.

A visit to Nissi Island on Lake Pamvotida adds a peaceful retreat to any itinerary. Accessible by water taxi, this island village was founded by refugees from the Mani and is home to the Monastery of Saint Panteleimon, where Ali Pasha was assassinated. The monastery now operates as a small museum, preserving the fascinating stories of the past.

Ioannina offers a unique combination of lake-side beauty, historical depth, and multicultural heritage, making it an ideal stop on a classical Greek fly-drive itinerary.
