Romanian Hiking Adventure – Transylvania Mountains & Villages

Discover the dramatic beauty of Transylvania on this nine-day hiking adventure through some of Romania’s most striking and diverse landscapes. From the towering peaks of the Bucegi Mountains, with their alpine meadows and rugged cliffs, to the limestone ridges and deep gorges of the Piatra Craiului Mountains, each day brings a new perspective on this remarkable region. The Zărnești Ravine offers a dramatic contrast with its steep, forested walls and sparkling mountain streams, while the Cindrel Mountains present gentler rolling hills dotted with traditional villages and pastoral farmland.

This journey balances active hiking with cultural immersion, allowing you to explore villages where centuries-old traditions and folklore still thrive. Visit shepherds’ houses to sample local cheese, enjoy picnic lunches in scenic locations, and witness the rural life that has changed little over generations. The tour culminates with a special farewell dinner, celebrating the flavours and customs of Transylvania.

Throughout the holiday, you will experience the variety and contrasts of Romania’s landscapes: from jagged peaks and alpine trails to forested valleys, tranquil pastures, and winding rivers. Each area showcases different flora, fauna, and local architecture, giving a complete picture of the region’s natural and cultural richness. For hiking enthusiasts, this is a dream itinerary, offering both challenging and moderate trails, all guided by knowledgeable locals.

Romania remains one of Europe’s most unexplored destinations, tucked away in a remote corner where much of the countryside follows traditional ways of life preserved over centuries. This tour combines spectacular scenery, cultural encounters, and authentic Romanian cuisine with immersive experiences in villages and rural communities, making it a uniquely memorable adventure.

Today starts with an easy hiking trail in the village of Magura, passing through dairy farms to reach Joaca Peak (1452m). Here you can admire the mighty splendour of the Piatra Craiului Mountain and, if you are fortunate, you'll encounter wild animals, as Piatra Craiului is the home of bears, lynx and mountain goats! After a well deserved lunch break* on the peak, the path heads down to the Zarnesti gorge; the final part of today's hike brings you back uphill to your guest house.

Dinner and accommodation at the Guesthouse Mosorel

Continue uphill to the Curmatura Cottage (1470m) where you'll stop for a warm lunch (here there are 2 to 3 different traditional Romanian soups prepared each day and at least one main dish).

Depending upon group preferences your guide will take you up to the Piatra Mica (1816m) or you can remain at the same altitude for a short hike and then the return route is across Poiana Zanoaga to the village of Magura.

From here the path continues through a dense forest on an excellent hiking trail up to 1800m. A stop will be made to have your packed lunch.
