About Rethymnon Region

The Prefecture of Rethymnon is a land of contrasts, where rugged mountains, lush valleys, deep gorges, and hidden caves meet the sparkling waters of the Cretan Sea to the north and the Libyan Sea to the south. It’s a place of history, natural beauty, and authentic Cretan life.

At the heart of the region lies Rethymnon town, a lively and charming resort with one of Crete’s longest sandy beaches. Its mediaeval old town is a delight to explore, with narrow streets, Venetian palaces, Turkish minarets, a scenic harbour, and the impressive Venetian fortress. Cafés, tavernas, and restaurants line the streets, offering a taste of traditional Cretan cuisine. The town is also a hub for exploring the island, with museums, monasteries, churches, and numerous archaeological sites nearby. Its central location and excellent bus service make day trips across Crete easy.

For a quieter stay, the smaller villages and coastal resorts of Rethymnon offer something special:

Bali – Once a fishing hamlet, Bali has grown into a welcoming tourist village. White houses overlook the small harbour and the sea, while tiny sand and shingle beaches invite sunbathing, swimming, and relaxation. Life is simple and easy-going, with a good selection of tavernas, cafés, shops, and even a nightclub. Nearby, the Melidoni Cave and the traditional pottery village of Margarites make great excursions. Bali is 32 kilometres from Rethymnon and is well connected by bus.

Panormos – Nestled between Heraklion and Rethymnon, Panormos is ideal for families, with calm, shallow beaches perfect for children. This authentic village, full of narrow streets and bright geraniums, offers a peaceful Cretan experience. Cafés, tavernas, and small shops provide local food and drinks, while the surrounding countryside invites walking and exploration. Historical sites nearby include the Monasteries of Arkadi and Preveli, as well as the Minoan Palace of Knossos. The area is also a gateway to hiking adventures, such as the Samaria Gorge, or visits to traditional mountain villages producing pottery and wood carvings.

Agia Galini – Often described as the prettiest village on Crete’s south coast, Agia Galini is built like an amphitheatre overlooking a small harbour with hills rising behind it. The village is largely pedestrianised, offering a peaceful atmosphere. Sandy and shingle beaches, restaurants, tavernas, and small shops make it a relaxing place to stay.

Plakias – A small old fishing village with a lovely harbour, Plakias sits between the mountains and the Libyan Sea. Its long sandy and shingle beach is perfect for swimming, sunbathing, or trying out watersports. Boats sail daily to nearby secluded beaches and coves. The village retains its laid-back Cretan charm, while the surrounding area offers plenty to explore: Preveli Monastery, the Venetian fortress at Frangokastello, the Minoan site at Phaistos, and the caves of Matala. The town of Rethymnon and the atmospheric Monastery of Arkadi are also within easy reach.

Rethymnon combines history, natural beauty, and authentic village life. Whether you are drawn to mediaeval streets, golden beaches, or mountain trails, there is something here for every traveller to enjoy.
