About Dhimitsana
Perched at the head of a gorge with the Menalo Mountains rising to the east, Dhimitsana is a stunningly scenic village with protected status. Its cobbled streets, stone-built mansions, and panoramic views make it a perfect place to linger for a night or two, relax, and soak up the authentic Greek mountain atmosphere.
Dhimitsana has a rich cultural and educational heritage. West of the town lies the Byzantine Monastery of Philosophos, which once housed the famous School of Dhimitsana, a secret institution where monks taught Greek language and culture during Ottoman rule. Though only part of the original building remains, it stands as a testament to the village’s enduring commitment to preserving Hellenic identity.
The monks also founded the village library in 1764. During Ottoman times, it was one of just four major libraries in Greece, safeguarding manuscripts, books, and knowledge that helped preserve Greek culture. Today, the library houses an impressive collection of 15,000 rare editions, making it a treasure trove for history and literature enthusiasts.
In recent years, many of Dhimitsana’s stone houses and buildings have been carefully restored, blending historic charm with modern comfort. Visitors can enjoy traditional local cuisine at the village’s tavernas, including hearty mountain dishes prepared from locally sourced ingredients, and explore nearby walking trails that reveal the beauty of the surrounding mountains and gorges.
