About Oia
Oia was once Santorini’s wealthiest village, home to ship captains who transported the island’s products, from wine to tomatoes, as far afield as Russia. These captains built grand mansions with incredible sea views, many of which have now been converted into luxurious hotels, attracting honeymooners and travellers celebrating special occasions.
Declared a “traditional settlement” after the 1956 earthquake, Oia has retained its historic charm, with narrow streets, whitewashed houses, and blue-domed churches creating a picture-perfect backdrop.
Oia is also world-famous for its breathtaking sunsets, drawing visitors from across the island every late afternoon. Watching the sun melt into the Aegean from the clifftops is truly magical—but do be prepared, it can get very busy!
Below the village, two small harbours sit 200 steps down: one for fishing boats and the other for excursions. Both offer excellent fish tavernas, perfect for a relaxed meal after a day of sightseeing or sunset-watching.
