About Milos
Milos is a volcanic island of extraordinary colour, often called the Island of Venus, as it was here that the famous Aphrodite of Milos (Venus de Milo) was discovered. Its landscape is unique, with more than 75 beaches showcasing silver sands, turquoise waters, and striking rocks in chalky white, terracotta, ochre, and jet black.
The island is rich in archaeological and religious heritage, including the famed catacombs and the Kyra tis Fylakopi, an artefact of immense historical significance.
Adamas, Milos’ main port, is a lively hub of 19th-century houses, narrow streets, excellent cafés, tavernas, and a picturesque harbour often dotted with impressive mega-yachts. In contrast, Pollonia, in the northeast, is a charming village renowned for fresh seafood and serves as the gateway to Kimolos, a nearby island famous for its chalk.
Traditional villages like Trypiti and Plaka showcase Milos’ historic character. Trypiti, named for the hollows carved into the soft ground, features windmills, some converted into self-catering accommodation. Plaka, the former capital, was built inland for protection against pirates and today offers delightful alleyways and breathtaking coastal views.
A visit to the catacombs is highly recommended. This massive complex of 291 arched tombs is considered the second most important early-Christian site after Rome. Nearby, the discovery site of the Venus de Milo offers a glimpse into the island’s legendary past.
Milos is also famous for its syrmata, traditional beach dwellings carved into rock walls, particularly in Mandrakia. Once fishermen’s retreats, many now serve as summer homes or holiday accommodation.
With 75 unique beaches, there’s something for every visitor. Agia Kyriaki offers white sand and watersports, Tsigrado rewards the adventurous with a hidden cove, Provatas is ideal for families, Sarakiniko is a lunar-like landscape perfect for photography and diving, and Kleftiko, accessible only by boat, was once a pirate hideout surrounded by dramatic white rocks.
Milos combines breathtaking natural beauty, fascinating history, and a tranquil yet vibrant island life, making it an unforgettable destination for discerning travellers.
