About Metsovo
Once known for its cattle farming, Metsovo has grown into a characterful mountain town with a rich cultural heritage and welcoming atmosphere. Perched on the slopes of Mount Pindos at an altitude of 1,156 m, this friendly town of 6,000 population offers an abundance of dramatic landscapes, traditional architecture, and an authentic Greek experience far from the more commercial tourist routes. The local cheese shop is definitely worth a visit - the owner specialises in delicious cheeses from the region as well as a selection of meats, and spoon sweets, a delicacy from this part of Greece.
Metsovo dates back to Byzantine times and flourished during the Ottoman era, leaving behind a legacy of beautiful monasteries and churches waiting to be explored. Just a short drive away lies the Pindus National Park (Valia Kalda) – one of Europe’s most untouched natural reserves. This pristine wilderness shelters over 80 bird species and rare wildlife, including brown bears and wild goats, making it a haven for nature lovers and adventurers alike.
The Ursa Trail is a 40-km long, hiking path around the town which is passable for most of the year. It has recently been given the award of Leading Quality Trails - Best of Europe certification by the European Ramblers’ Association.
