About Konitsa
Calling all nature lovers! Konitsa offers a chance to escape the crowds and immerse yourself in spectacular scenery, forests, and rivers. Built at an altitude of 630 metres and carved into the hillside of Trapezitsa, this charming town is considered one of the most beautiful in Epirus. Its elegant stone buildings, cobbled alleyways, and traditional architecture exude timeless charm, while the panoramic views over the Aoos Valley are simply breathtaking.
The town is famous for its Konitsa Bridge, a striking 19th-century arched stone bridge that spans the dramatic Aoos Gorge. Built with donations from wealthy Epirots and local villagers, it once played a vital role in connecting remote communities and remains one of the most photographed landmarks in the region.
At the heart of Konitsa’s old town stands the 18th-century Manor of Housein Sisko Bey, a fine example of local architecture. Though damaged in the 1996 earthquake, the manor is undergoing careful restoration, allowing visitors to appreciate its historical and cultural significance.
Beyond the town, the surrounding area is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Hiking, rafting, and nature walks reveal forests, rivers, and gorges, offering an authentic experience of unspoilt Epirus. Konitsa is a perfect one night stopover on a self-drive itinerary.
