About Hydra
Hydra is arguably the most enchanting island in the Saronic Gulf, its horseshoe-shaped harbour framed by elegant stone mansions perched on the hillsides. Once owned by wealthy merchants, many of these historic homes feature private chapels, and the island’s strict architectural regulations ensure that modern buildings do not disrupt its timeless charm.
Hydra’s narrow cobbled streets, shaded squares, and vehicle-free streets (donkeys and mules provide transport instead) give the island a wonderfully unspoiled atmosphere. It was first discovered by artists in the 1950s and 60s, drawn to its luminous light, spectacular sunsets, and natural beauty — and today it remains a haven for painters, photographers, and creatives.
The island also has a literary and musical legacy: Leonard Cohen spent many summers here, inspired by Hydra’s tranquility and romantic vistas. Visitors come to unwind, explore the harbour, or take part in island hopping to nearby gems such as Aegina and Poros, making Hydra an ideal stop on a Saronic itinerary.
Beaches are mostly pebbly, with one sandy beach on the west, accessible by water taxi. During the peak summer months, day-trippers from Athens and neighbouring islands bring life to the harbour, yet Hydra’s serene charm remains unmistakable.
Hydra perfectly blends history, natural beauty, and cultural allure, making it a timeless favourite for discerning travellers.
