About Zagori
Zagori, meaning “behind the mountains” in Slavic, is a breathtaking region of 46 traditional mountain villages, dense pine forests, sparkling rivers, and a wealth of flora and fauna. Famous for its stone bridges, cobbled streets, and preserved architecture, Zagori offers visitors a peaceful escape into authentic Greek mountain life.
One of the region’s highlights is Papigo, built on the slopes of Mount Astraka, which is divided into Small (Mikro) and Great (Megalo) Papigo. Both areas have retained their traditional charm, with grand manor houses, narrow cobbled streets, and natural springs that supply fresh mountain water. The villages are a perfect base for hiking, trekking, and outdoor adventures in the surrounding peaks.
For nature lovers, Drakolimni, the largest alpine lake in Vikos-Aoos National Park, is a must-see. Set high in the Timfi mountains, this glacial lake offers spectacular scenery and is accessible via scenic trails. Another natural wonder is the Vikos Gorge, one of the world’s deepest gorges. Stretching approximately 12 kilometres through west and central Zagori, its cliffs soar up to 1,200 metres, offering breathtaking views and unforgettable walking opportunities.
Monodendri is one of Zagori’s most picturesque and well-known villages. Its large square, traditional houses, and historic churches reflect the wealth and culture of the area during the Ottoman period. Highlights include the 15th-century Monastery of St Paraskevi and the 17th-century Church of St Minas, both of which provide fascinating insight into the region’s history and heritage.
Zagori is perfect for travellers seeking unspoilt landscapes, outdoor adventure, and authentic village life, with traditional architecture, local hospitality, and a sense of timeless tranquillity at every turn.
