About Preveza

Where the Ionian Sea meets the Ambracian Gulf, Preveza offers a refined escape rich in culture & history. Once part of the ancient city of Nicopolis – founded by Augustus after his victory at Actium – the area still bears traces of its classical past, from Roman ruins to elegant neoclassical mansions that line the old town’s narrow streets.

Today, Preveza blends heritage with a relaxed, contemporary rhythm. The harbourfront is alive with cafés, wine bars and boutique shops, while nearby beaches (for example, Monolithos) stretch for miles.

Local cuisine is a revelation. The Ambracian Gulf is famed for its prawns and fresh fish, often served with citrus and herbs from the hillsides. Olive oil, local cheeses and sun-ripened produce are both simple and delicious.

Preveza’s layered history reveals itself in its streets and monuments. The Saïtan Bazaar, the Archaeological Museum, the clock tower and its sundial, and the church of Agios Haralambos with its ornate carved iconostasis all tell stories of faith and artistry. The 18th-century frescoes of Agios Athanasios and the imposing Pantokrator Castle, built by Ali Pasha in 1807, stand as testaments to the city’s enduring spirit.

Whether as a tranquil base for exploring Epirus or a destination in its own right, Preveza rewards those who appreciate authenticity, fine food and the gentle rhythm of coastal Greece.
