About Kastoria
Framed by the Grammo and Vitsi Mountains and set on a peninsula that stretches into Lake Orestiada, Kastoria is one of northern Greece’s most captivating destinations.
While Kastoria offers all the comforts of a modern town, it remains steeped in history. Explore narrow streets (sometimes hilly!) with Byzantine churches, centuries-old stone houses and classical mansions that reflect the town’s background as a fur trading centre.
Art lovers will be drawn to the Byzantine Museum and Archaeological Museum, where masterfully preserved icons, sculptures, and artefacts reveal the artistry of a bygone era. Kastoria is home to more than 60 Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches - a remarkable testament to its spiritual and artistic past.
Many say Orestiada is the most picturesque lake in Greece — and it’s easy to see why. Enjoy a leisurely stroll along the narrow, tree-shaded promenade, where reflections of beech and plane trees ripple across the water. The lake is also a haven for nature lovers, home to over 200 species of birds, including several rare and endangered varieties.
Don’t miss the Dragon’s Cave, where seven underground lakes and stunning formations of stalactites and stalagmites create an unforgettable spectacle. Just beyond lies the Monastery of Panagia Mavriotissa, founded in the 11th century. Its exquisite frescoes, dating from the early 13th century, are considered masterpieces of Byzantine art — depicting sacred scenes such as the Second Coming and the Holy Trinity.
In Dexameni Square, the Byzantine Art Museum showcases more than 700 remarkable works — icons, murals, and sculptures that celebrate the town’s artistic heritage. A short stroll away, the historic Doltso district enchants visitors with beautifully preserved mansions and elegant architecture that tell stories of a prosperous past.
For sweeping views follow the leafy pathway up to Profitis Ilias Church and continue to the Agios Athanasios viewpoint.
