About Ierapetra
Ierapetra, Europe’s most southerly town, enjoys a wonderfully mild climate and a relaxed, sun-drenched atmosphere. Steeped in history, the town has been an important settlement since ancient times, with Roman remains, a Venetian fort, and a Turkish mosque and minaret all testifying to its rich past.
At the heart of Ierapetra lies a long, palm-lined promenade dotted with charming shops, cafés, tavernas, and boutique hotels. The small harbour, overlooked by the Venetian fort, provides a delightful backdrop for an evening stroll. The town’s surroundings are equally captivating: greenhouses stretch across the fertile plains where much of the local population works, while pine forests, olive groves, and scattered traditional villages create an inviting countryside perfect for gentle walks and exploration.
Ierapetra’s kilometre-long sandy and shingle beach, with its attractive coves, includes two Blue Flag beaches ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and watersports. From here, boat trips offer the chance to explore nearby bays or the golden sands of the islands of Chrisi and Koufonisi, with their striking crushed-shell beaches.
The region is also perfect for day excursions: visit Agios Nikolaos, the Lassithi Plain with its iconic windmills, the Butterfly Gorge, or the palm-fringed paradise of Vai beach. Whether you’re seeking history, natural beauty, or a peaceful coastal retreat, Ierapetra provides a wonderful base for a relaxed yet enriching Cretan experience.
