About Atlas Mountains
Morocco's mountain ranges are incredible areas of wilderness and beauty. As well as offering superb and breathtaking scenery whilst driving from one part of Morocco to another, the Atlas and Rif Mountains have some wonderful hotels and kasbahs to entice visitors away from the cities and coast.
The Rif Mountains of the north hide impressive Roman ruins of immense scale, particularly the site of Volubilis, a thermal spa at Moulay Yacoub and the lovely small town of Chefchaouen. The Mid Atlas and High Atlas both offer excellent trekking and a limited ski season (Ifrane and Oukaimeden). The High Atlas in particular, dominated by Mount Toubkal (North Africa's highest peak at 4167m) and the Tichka Plateau has high quality and intimate hotels, particularly in the Ouirgane area. Finally, in the southwest, not far from Agadir and the Atlantic, don't overlook one of our favourite locations - the Auberge de Cascades at Immouzer.
The Anti Atlas, the furthest south, is much less developed for tourism and although less dramatic in the size of its peaks it does offer unique scenery due to its totally different geology and its famous painted rocks; this region offers an opportunity to explore a part of Morocco overlooked by so many.
