About Aegina
Aegina is perfect for travellers wishing to explore Athens and the surrounding region while enjoying a quieter, more relaxed pace. The neighbouring Saronic Gulf islands of Hydra and Poros are easily reached on day trips, adding further opportunities for discovery.
Aegina Town offers a lively harbour where modern cafés sit alongside traditional tavernas. The island is famous for its pistachios, with over a million trees, and local shops and markets showcase this beloved delicacy. Small boats bob gently in the harbour, while family-run tavernas near the fish market serve freshly grilled seafood enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.
For seafood lovers, the southern village of Perdika is unmissable. Its pedestrianised waterfront is lined with historic tavernas, some run by the same families for generations. Just a short boat ride away, the tiny island of Moni offers crystal-clear waters for swimming and a tranquil escape.
Cultural highlights abound. On the road to Aghia Marina, visit the Monastery of Agios Nektarios, Greece’s largest church, completed in 1994. Nearby lies the ghost village of Paleochora, built in the 9th century to guard against pirates and abandoned after Greek Independence, where a handful of churches remain. The island’s most celebrated monument, the Temple of Aphaia, sits above Aghia Marina in a fragrant pine forest. Forming a perfect triangle with the Parthenon in Athens and the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion, it is one of Greece’s most complete ancient temples.
Aghia Marina is a charming resort with a relaxed atmosphere. Its main street offers restaurants, cafés, bars, supermarkets, boutiques, and jewellery shops, while the gently shelving beach below is ideal for children and less confident swimmers, combining convenience with tranquillity.
Aegina blends history, culture, and serene island life, making it an ideal base for exploring the Saronic Gulf or simply enjoying a peaceful Greek escape.
