Pelion Small-Group Walking Holiday – Mountains, Villages, Coast & Cuisine

Experience the beauty of Mount Pelion, the legendary Land of the Centaurs, on this small-group walking holiday combining easy-paced hikes, local culture, and exceptional food. The region’s lush landscapes, dotted with orchards, olive and chestnut groves, and beech forests, provide a perfect setting for walking and relaxation, while 24 traditional villages emerge through the forests, their cobbled streets and elegant manor houses reflecting the skill of 19th-century stone masons and craftsmen.

Walk along mountain trails and coastal paths, stopping to explore Milies, Kala Nera, Tsagarada, Damouchari, Chania, and Portaria. Along the way, enjoy sweeping views over the Aegean Sea, wander cobbled streets, and pause to swim in crystal-clear, secluded beaches — a perfect balance of walking, swimming, and relaxation. Local tavernas offer an opportunity to taste authentic Pelion cuisine, with fresh ingredients and regional specialties enhancing the journey.

The tour also includes a hike at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Meteora, where monasteries perch atop towering sandstone pinnacles. Built by monks from the 11th century, these structures were once accessed by rope ladders and nets, and today six remain inhabited and open to visitors. The combination of dramatic landscapes, cultural heritage, and moderate hiking trails makes this tour a truly memorable experience for walkers and history enthusiasts alike.

This small-group holiday is led by qualified mountain guides with extensive experience in the region, ensuring safety, insight, and a rewarding pace for all participants. The itinerary is also available as a Private Journey for a minimum of two people, offering the same expert guidance and immersive experience in a more personalised format.

This is the best way to explore the beauty of this unique area; you'll walk on the same trails as the monks did centuries ago. Along the way you will spot some of the earliest stages of occupation by the monks, simple cave dwellings and more elaborate "monasteries" hundreds of feet up the side of the rocks.

Today's hike begins at Damouchari taking the shoreline path to Agios Ioannis and the breathtakingly white sandy beach of Papa Nero. It would be a crime not to leave ample time for relaxing and a swim.  30 minute transfer to Chania, followed by an afternoon walk in the area of  the ski centre.

  • Trekking time: approx. 3 hours
  • Trek Difficulty Level: Easy

Today you will follow the same path that was used, according to Greek Mythology, by the Centaurs, half-horse half-human creatures which constantly struggled with their two natures, one beastly and one civil. The best known of their breed and a notable exception was Chiron, famous for his modest and learned ways. He was known for his medicinal skills and teaching abilities and was the tutor of a number of mythical Greeks such as Achilles and Asclepius.

This path, which begins in Chania at an altitude of approximately 1200 metres and overflowing with Mediterranean vegetation, leads you to the village of Portaria. In the afternoon discover yet another incredibly beautiful village of Pelion – that of Makrinitsa or “the balcony of Pelion”. With its historic old mansions and stunning view of the Pagasitikos Bay and the city of Volos below, hence its nickname, the beauty of Makrinitsa will become etched in your memory forever.

  • Overnight stay: Portaria
  • Trekking time: approx. 3 hours
  • Trek Difficulty Level: Easy
  • Meals: Breakfast, picnic lunch, dinner
  • Trekking altitude: 1200m – 610m

  • Meals: Breakfast.
