Explore the Peloponnese – A Fly-Drive Holiday through Greece’s Ancient Heartland
The Peloponnese is a region of contrasts, where some of Greece’s most ancient sites sit alongside wild, dramatic landscapes — particularly in the remote Mani peninsula. This self-drive itinerary is one of our most established and popular, offering the chance to explore the region’s iconic sights while also enjoying its less-travelled corners and beautiful countryside.
Starting from Athens, the Peloponnese is just a short drive away, making it an ideal introduction to mainland Greece. There are a number of route versions and you may choose to return via the world-famous sanctuary of Delphi, crossing the spectacular Rion-Antirion Bridge, which spans the Gulf of Corinth and offers breathtaking views.
Our suggested route begins in Athens, with its unrivalled blend of classical history and contemporary vibrancy. From here, travel to Nafplion, an elegant seaport town known for its Venetian architecture, lively harbour, and charming cafés and, of course, its proximity to the famous ancient sites of Mycenae and Epidavros. Continue south to Monemvasia, a medieval fortress town dramatically set on a rocky island, where cobbled streets, Byzantine churches and panoramic sea views create an unforgettable atmosphere.
The journey then leads into the rugged Mani peninsula, where traditional stone villages cling to hillsides and the landscape is wild and unspoilt. Further stops include Pylos, a picturesque coastal town with a rich naval history and views across the Ionian Sea, and Sparta, the historic heart of ancient Laconia, offering archaeological sites set against the surrounding Taygetos mountains. The route also passes through Nemea, renowned for its vineyards and the legendary site of the ancient Nemean Games.
For those wishing to extend their trip, additional days could include a visit to Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games, or a ride on the scenic Kalavrita Railway, winding through dramatic gorges and mountain landscapes, before returning to Athens; considering perhaps the route back via Delphi.
This recommended route has stood the test of time, allowing you plenty of opportunity to take in the scenery and explore at a comfortable pace. The itinerary is flexible and can easily be adapted if you would prefer a different balance of sightseeing and relaxation. It is also possible to start and finish from the airport of Kalamata if more convenient.
To tailor your fly-drive holiday, we just need your approximate travel dates, preferred hotel standard, and any particular areas or classical sites you wish to include or omit. Your holiday can be as active or as leisurely as you like. One night at each stop maximises sightseeing, two or more nights allow for side trips, and staying in a single location gives time to soak up the local atmosphere.
You may also wish to extend your stay with a few days on one of Greece’s islands or elsewhere on the mainland — we would be delighted to advise and suggest options.
For those who prefer not to drive, guided tours or a private driver can be arranged to follow the same itinerary, ensuring you experience the Peloponnese in comfort and style.
Not included: the New "Climate TAX" for overnights in hotels. This is to be paid directly to the hotel, prior to check-out . The price depends on the hotel category.
