Northwest Greece Fly-Drive – Epirus, Meteora & Lefkas
This self-drive holiday explores the lesser-known regions of northwest mainland Greece, with a focus on the spectacular landscapes of Epirus and Western Macedonia. Along the way, you will encounter iconic landmarks such as the monasteries of Meteora and the lakeside town of Ioannina, framed by dramatic mountains, rivers, and unspoilt countryside.
The journey can begin in Preveza, which now has many convenient direct flights from the UK and other European cities. (Athens, Ioannina and Thessaloniki are also possible starting points).
A typical route allows you to explore the south of Epirus, with visits to historic Arta, known for its iconic stone bridge spanning the Arachthos River, and the nearby Zalongo cliffs, famed for their striking monument and panoramic views over the Ionian Sea. The route also passes Nikopolis, the site of the ancient city and Roman battlefield, before heading north to the picturesque lakeside town of Ioannina.
Further north, the itinerary can include Kastoria, a charming town set on a lake, with Byzantine churches and traditional architecture, and the serene Prespa Lakes, shared with Albania and North Macedonia, offering opportunities for gentle walks and birdwatching. Along the way, the dramatic landscapes of Zagori and the Vikos Gorge provide the chance for optional hiking and exploration of remote stone villages and bridges.
Optional extensions include coastal relaxation in Parga or a short trip to the island of Lefkas, with its turquoise waters and sandy beaches providing a perfect contrast to the mountains and gorges of Epirus. If arriving into Thessaloniki you can also include the Mount Olympus area and the ancient site of Vergina.
This is a tried and trusted itinerary, designed to allow you to enjoy the scenery, culture, and outdoor activities at a comfortable pace. It is flexible and can be adapted to suit your interests — whether you prefer longer stays in certain locations, additional side trips, or a more relaxed journey.
To tailor your holiday, we will need your approximate travel dates, preferred hotel standard, and any particular sites or regions you would like to include or omit. One night at each stop maximises sightseeing, two or more nights allow for excursions, and staying in a single place offers time to relax and explore the local area at leisure.
For those who prefer not to drive, guided tours or a private driver can be arranged to follow the same itinerary, ensuring a seamless and comfortable experience.
Finally, why not extend your stay with a few days on Lefkas or in the charming resort of Parga? We will be happy to offer suggestions and help plan the perfect addition to your holiday.
