Northwest Greece Fly-Drive – Epirus, Meteora & Lefkas

This self-drive holiday explores the lesser-known regions of northwest mainland Greece, with a focus on the spectacular landscapes of Epirus and Western Macedonia. Along the way, you will encounter iconic landmarks such as the monasteries of Meteora and the lakeside town of Ioannina, framed by dramatic mountains, rivers, and unspoilt countryside.

The journey can begin in Preveza, which now has many convenient direct flights from the UK and other European cities. (Athens, Ioannina and Thessaloniki are also possible starting points).

A typical route allows you to explore the south of Epirus, with visits to historic Arta, known for its iconic stone bridge spanning the Arachthos River, and the nearby Zalongo cliffs, famed for their striking monument and panoramic views over the Ionian Sea. The route also passes Nikopolis, the site of the ancient city and Roman battlefield, before heading north to the picturesque lakeside town of Ioannina.

Further north, the itinerary can include Kastoria, a charming town set on a lake, with Byzantine churches and traditional architecture, and the serene Prespa Lakes, shared with Albania and North Macedonia, offering opportunities for gentle walks and birdwatching. Along the way, the dramatic landscapes of Zagori and the Vikos Gorge provide the chance for optional hiking and exploration of remote stone villages and bridges.

Optional extensions include coastal relaxation in Parga or a short trip to the island of Lefkas, with its turquoise waters and sandy beaches providing a perfect contrast to the mountains and gorges of Epirus. If arriving into Thessaloniki you can also include the Mount Olympus area and the ancient site of Vergina.

This is a tried and trusted itinerary, designed to allow you to enjoy the scenery, culture, and outdoor activities at a comfortable pace. It is flexible and can be adapted to suit your interests — whether you prefer longer stays in certain locations, additional side trips, or a more relaxed journey.

To tailor your holiday, we will need your approximate travel dates, preferred hotel standard, and any particular sites or regions you would like to include or omit. One night at each stop maximises sightseeing, two or more nights allow for excursions, and staying in a single place offers time to relax and explore the local area at leisure.

For those who prefer not to drive, guided tours or a private driver can be arranged to follow the same itinerary, ensuring a seamless and comfortable experience.

Finally, why not extend your stay with a few days on Lefkas or in the charming resort of Parga? We will be happy to offer suggestions and help plan the perfect addition to your holiday.

Not included: the New "Climate TAX" for overnights in hotels. This  is to be paid directly to the hotel, prior to check-out . The price depends on the hotel category.

Highlights

Itinerary

Fly into Preveza (Aktion) Airport and pick up your hire car. Drive through the tunnel across the mouth of the Ambracian Gulf - the beautiful scenery of which will dominate the first half of your journey today. Continue to the small but vibrant town of Preveza, followed by a visit to the extensive ancient site of Nikopolis and then a drive along the shore of the Ambracian Gulf, with a brief detour to Arta (particularly to see its magnificent old bridge). From Arta you can drive to Ioannina on the new highway or enjoy the laid back old road.

Overnight in Ioanina - 2nts B&B.

Recommended places to stay

A full day to visit the highlights of this part of Epirus including lakeside Ioanina itself with its fabulous Ottoman old town and fortress with a number of museums and the island containing Ali Pasha's palace - frequent ferry boats. Nearby are the incredible ruins at Dodoni and the Perama Caves.

An interesting drive today up into the mountains to visit and stay in the fascinating town of Metsovo. The two places are now linked by the highway but you should consider using the older road which offers some quite stunning views along the way.

Metsovo has grown into a characterful mountain town with a rich cultural heritage and welcoming atmosphere. Perched on the slopes of Mount Pindos at an altitude of 1,156 m, this friendly town of 6,000 population offers an abundance of dramatic landscapes, traditional architecture, and an authentic Greek experience far from the more commercial tourist routes — an ideal stop for travellers seeking the authentic heart of northern Greece.

Overnight in Metsovo - 1nt B&B.

After a lovely morning in Metsovo it is time for a relatively short but scenic drive down to Kalambaka to see the increble sight of monasteries in the sky - the UNESCO site of Meteora. * you can take the highway, including the long tunnel for the first half of this route or rejoin the mountain road for more mountain vistas (and corners).

A full day to do some hiking and exploring in the area as well as visiting one or more of the monasteries which are open to the public. Bicycles and e-bikes are available to hire if you are feeling adventurous.

Overnight in Kastraki - 2nts B&B.

From Meteora head north into Macedonia and the town of Grevena - you can take the highway almost all the way today, particularly if, at this point, you wish to detour to Vergina (with a possible extra night). Otherwise, head north to the mysterious lakeside town Kastoria or our suggested alternative location - Nymphaio.

Take a full day to explore Kastoria, including its many churches and monasteries and the Dragon Cave; we also recommend a detour to visit the Prespa Lakes National Park which border Albania & Northern Macedonia.

Overnight in Kastoria (or Nymphaio) - 2nts B&B.

Time to travel southwest and back into Eprius once more; this time into the area known as Zagori. Drive along some fabulous roads from Neapoli through the Pindus Mountains and via the little town of Konitsa into the heart of the Vikos - Aoos National Park; stay in the traditional Monodendri village.

A full day to hike in the Vikos Gorge as well as visiting the unique ancient bridges and many traditional villages.

Overnight in Zagori region - 2nts B&B.

Drive down to the coast at Igoumenitsa (scenic route or via Ioannina and the highway). If you have a late flight then you can easily visit one or more of these places along the way: Sivota, Parga, the Necromanteion, Zalongo Monument, finishing back at Preveza (Aktion) Airport.

If you would like to make your holiday up to a full two weeks then we'd recommend an extension of your stay with a few nights in Parga, Sivota or Kanali on the mainland coast of Epirus or perhaps on the beautiful island of Lefkas, which is attached to the mainland via a causeway just a few kms beyond the airport.
