The Classic Roads of Greece.

Our Classic Roads of Greece self-drive holiday showcases some of mainland Greece’s most celebrated sights and landscapes, combining ancient history with stunning scenery. This itinerary takes in iconic sites such as Delphi, Olympia and Mycenae, interspersed with the rugged coastline, rolling countryside and mountain landscapes that make Greece so remarkable.

Starting from Athens, the Peloponnese, with its many famous ancient sites, is just a short drive away, making it an ideal introduction to mainland Greece, returning via the world-famous sanctuary of Delphi by crossing the striking Rion-Antirion Bridge, which spans the Gulf of Corinth and offers breathtaking views.

A typical route begins in Athens, where classical landmarks sit alongside vibrant cafés and contemporary life. After settling into the Greek way of life pick up your hire car and travel to the Argolis region and the elegant harbour town of Nafplion, famed for its Venetian architecture, winding streets and charming seaside atmosphere and, of course, its proximity to the magnificent sites of Mycenae and Epidavros. Continue west to Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games, with its extraordinary archaeological site and surrounding lush valley. The journey concludes with a visit to Delphi, once considered the centre of the ancient world, set amidst dramatic mountain scenery and crowned by the ruins of the Temple of Apollo.

This suggested route is our most popular and long-established, designed to allow plenty of time to enjoy both the scenery and the cultural highlights. It is flexible and can be adapted to suit your preferences, whether that means longer stays in certain locations, side trips, or a more relaxed pace.

To help tailor your holiday, we will need your approximate travel dates, preferred hotel standard, and any specific sites or regions you wish to include or omit. One night at each stop maximises sightseeing, two or more nights allow for excursions, while staying in a single place gives time to relax and explore the local area at leisure.

For those who prefer not to drive, guided tours or a private driver can be arranged to follow the same itinerary, ensuring you experience the highlights of Greece in comfort and style.

Finally, why not extend your stay with a few days on one of Greece’s islands or elsewhere on the mainland? We would be delighted to offer suggestions and help arrange a seamless continuation of your holiday.

Not included: the new "Climate TAX" for overnights in hotels. This  is to be paid directly to the hotel, prior to check-out . The price depends on the hotel category.

Recommended places to stay

Enjoy your day at leisure in Athens, a vibrant city with a wealth of history and many places to tick off your sightseeing list: Constitution Square, the Houses of Parliament, the Memorial to the Unknown Soldier, the Evzones in their unusual costumes, the Presidential Palace, the Panathenaic stadium (where the first Olympic Games of the modern era were held in 1896), the Temple of Olympian Zeus and Hadrian’s Arch.

If preferred, we can arrange a half day guided tour of the city (group or private).

In the evening why not stroll around Plaka, the old part of the city, and enjoy a meal at one of its traditional restaurants.

Leave the city by the coastal road, which hugs the Saronic Gulf, to the Corinth Canal which connects the Ionian and Aegean seas. Continue on to Mycenae, one of the great cities of the Mycenaean civilization, which played a vital role in classical Greek culture. Here you'll see the famous Lion's Gate, the Royal Tombs and the Cyclopean Walls.

Not far from here the theatre at Epidavros (4th century BC) is famed for its astonishing acoustics. Nafplion is often referred to as the most romantic town in Greece, nestling at the foot of a cliff crowned by the mighty ramparts of the Palamidi Fortress.

** ADD an extra night in Nafplion to explore the ancient Argolis region in more detail; it is crammed full of sites and wonderful places to visit as well as allowing you time to relax in Nafplion.

Recommended places to stay

Journey westwards through the mountains passing Argos and Tripoli en route to Olympia, birthplace of the Olympic Games. Visit the ruins of the most important monuments on the archaeological site and aferwards visit the museum.

** ADD an extra night in Olympia to give yourself a full day to explore the ancient site; this also allows you more time to enjoy the journey through the mountains between Nafplion and Olympia.

Recommended places to stay

Head north to Patras and make your way across the magnificent Rion-Antirion bridge. Once across, you might like to have a coffee break in Nafpaktos, a small picturesque town with a Venetian fortress. Also along this route is the lovely little seaside town of Galaxidi.

Continue on to Delphi, the centre of the Ancient World, whose prestige extended far beyond the boundaries of the Hellenic world. In a landscape of majesty and unparalleled beauty on the slopes of Mount Parnassus Delphi is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

** ADD an extra night in Delphi or perhaps by the sea in Galaxidi. This will allow you to break up the journey; it would also allow a side trip to experience the Kalavrita Railway.
