Highlights of Bosnia & Herzegovina: Short Fly-Drive Adventure

Discover the highlights of Bosnia & Herzegovina on a short but unforgettable break, taking in the country’s dramatic landscapes, historic towns, and vibrant culture in just under a week. This suggested route allows you to experience the best of the country in a circuit that includes Mostar, Sarajevo, and Trebinje, combining iconic sights with lesser-known treasures along the way.

Your journey begins or ends in the fascinating capital, Sarajevo, a city of contrasts where Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, and modern influences meet. Explore its historic streets, sample traditional cuisine, and reflect on its complex history, including the memories of the nearly four-year siege and the legacy of the 1984 Winter Olympic Games.

Venture south to Mostar, where the world-famous Stari Most (Old Bridge) stands as a symbol of reconciliation and resilience. Destroyed in 1993 during the Bosnian War and rebuilt with meticulous care by 2004, the bridge and its atmospheric old town are well worth an overnight stay, allowing time to fully absorb the charm of cobbled streets, Ottoman architecture, and local culture.

The scenic drive through Bosnia & Herzegovina is as much a part of the experience as the towns themselves. The route takes you through breathtaking canyons, mountains, lakes, and waterfalls, including the Neretva and Drina valleys, Jablanicko and Blecko lakes, and the Skakavec and Kravice waterfalls. Along the way, discover historic villages, fascinating monuments from the communist era, ancient fortifications, and medieval castles, including Pocitelj, Konjic, Foca, and Stolac.

Break your journey in the tranquil town of Trebinje, where an early morning riverside walk is the perfect introduction to the gentle pace and natural beauty of the region. This short fly-drive combines scenic drives, cultural immersion, and historic exploration, offering a perfect taster of Bosnia & Herzegovina’s diverse and captivating landscape.

Highlights

Itinerary

On arrival you will have a private transfer service directly to your hotel. Once in Sarajevo you can spend the evening taking in the atmosphere of the old town and begin to appreciate its long history and the much more recent turbulent period of the city. Sarajevo is an easy city to walk around and there are so many food options on offer. You can also explore the traditional crafts and enjoy your first Bosnian Coffee.

A full day to explore Sarajevo's capital city.

When travelling about Sarajevo you will feel totally at ease as there is a real, 'welcome to Sarajevo' atmosphere throughout the city. Places to visit include the old town, including the Bascarsija, as well as many fine cultural sites such as the Bosniak institute, the National Theatre and the National Museum. Whilst in the city your curiosity about the War of Independence and the Siege of Sarajevo can be satisfied with a number of sympathetic exhibitions and experiences such as the Tunnel of Hope - we definitely recommend a guided tour to understand a little of what it was like to live here during this turbulent period.

If you would like a short trip to see the mountains and some of the Olympic locations then you can take the cable car to enjoy the views and explore what remains of the bobsleigh run. Also not far from the city, is the second tallest waterfall in Europe (98m), so beautiful that it is worth the short trip.

A beautiful scenic drive is in store today. You'll leave Sarajevo heading southeast and following the Zeleznica river upstream to cross the mountains at the Rogoj Pass (1161m) heading to Foca on the Drina river. The next section of this route involves two mountain passes over 1000m, the Sutjeska National Park with Maglic Mountain (Bosnia's highest peak) dominating the views and Bilecko Lake; there is also so much fabulous scenery in-between. Ending the day in Trebinje for a 2 night stay.  An alternative option is to take a different route out of Sarajevo, to Gorazde, and stay there or in nearby Visegrad, whilst also visiting this fascinating town.

A full day in the delightful town of Trebinje in the Republic of Srpska. Trebinje's Stari Grad (old town) is intact and is full of life in the evenings offering locals and visitors alike a choice of bars, restaurants and ice-cream parlours. Trebinje has its own Old Bridge (the Arslanagica) which is worthy of a stroll alongside the river to view and walk over (why not try this as early as possible for some great photos). Return to your hotel and a visit to the traditional market on the main square.

before heading out of town in the afternoon towards Mostar. Along the way you could visit any of the Radmila Stecci, the Vjetrenica caves, the Kravice waterfalls and the historic village of Pocitelj.

Recommended places to stay

A full day in Mostar to relax and explore the historic town with its world-famous bridge. You also have the option to go walking in hills nearby. Additional places to visit include nearby Blagaj with its famous Dervish House tucked under the cliff and overlooking the river.

Today you embark upon one of the most scenic drives in the Balkans, along the Neretva river valley with its impressive canyon not far to the north of Mostar. Your route also passes the beautiful lake of Jablaniko and historic town of Konjic prior to arrival back in Sarajevo.

Drop off car or private transfer to Sarajevo Airport.
